The end of אותו ואת בנו, and the opening of פרק כסוי הדם: the scope of the מצוה and why מוקדשין are exempt.

Overview

This amud first closes the chapter אותו ואת בנו. רבי reads "יום אחד" as "a special day" that needs a כרוז. This is the source for a seller's duty to tell the buyer about related animals on four times a year. After the הדרן, a new chapter opens with a משנה on כסוי הדם. It applies everywhere and at all times, to חולין but not מוקדשין, and to חיה and עוף. The doubtful כוי gets its blood covered, but it may not be slaughtered on יום טוב. The גמרא then asks why מוקדשין are exempt. It first suggests רבי זירא's rule that covering needs earth below and above, which is impossible on the מזבח. When challenged that earth could still go on top, it answers with רבי זירא's rule that a step which could never be done holds back the whole מצוה. Finally, asked why the blood isn't scraped off and covered elsewhere, the גמרא says the משנה is about קדשי בדק הבית. That answer is examined further on the next amud.
