Topic
Crushed testicles, removing blood from meat, the two nerves of the גיד הנשה, butchers and leftover חלב, and sending a thigh to a non-Jew.
Overview
The amud opens in the middle of an argument about crushed testicles. One side says they never heal, so they count as אבר מן החי. The other side says they never rot, so they are still alive. רבי יוחנן rules that they are permitted, but tells רב שמן בר אבא to keep his home's strict custom. Next come rules about removing blood: young goats' testicles, then raw meat, testicles and neck veins placed on coals, where the הלכה follows the lenient view of רב אחא. After that, an animal's head is placed in hot ashes, and what matters is whether the blood has a way out. The גמרא then returns to the גיד הנשה. שמואל says it has two nerves, and the גמרא settles two ברייתות against him. Next it rules how much leftover חלב gets a butcher lashes (a כזית) or removed from his job (a barley grain). It also explains, in two versions, why butchers' trustworthiness changed over the generations. Finally a new משנה allows sending a whole thigh with the גיד הנשה to a non-Jew. The גמרא begins to ask what case the משנה means, and that question continues on the next amud.
