Sending a thigh with the גיד הנשה to a גוי, and the prohibition of גניבת דעת (misleading people, even a גוי).
Overview
This amud has three parts. It opens by finishing a question about sending a גוי a thigh that still has the גיד הנשה in it: a whole thigh is allowed, but a cut one is not. The גמרא asks how that can be. Where they don't announce non-kosher sales (מקום שאין מכריזין), even a cut thigh should be fine. Where they do announce (מקום שמכריזין), even a whole thigh should be risky. It answers that in the second kind of place, meat cut by a גוי is easy to recognize. In the first kind of place, a cut thigh is banned by a גזירה, or because sending it would deceive the גוי, following שמואל's rule against גניבת דעת even toward a גוי. The גמרא then shows that שמואל's rule was only inferred from a story about a ferryman, and that each version of the story could be read another way. Next come ברייתות about other ways of misleading people: fake invitations, sold barrels, a half-empty jug for a mourner, a sandal from a dead animal, and a wine barrel topped with oil. Two tragic stories show how much harm such things can cause, and the גמרא shows that one whole ברייתא belongs to רבי אליעזר בן יעקב. Finally, a ברייתא returns to the גיד הנשה and to selling non-kosher meat to a גוי. The amud ends just as it begins a rule with two reasons, which are given on the next amud.
