Topic

Sight recognition versus identifying marks, and the laws of removing and eating the גיד הנשה

Overview

The amud opens with a speaker changing his mind. He used to think סימנים were stronger than טביעות עינא. After hearing the rulings about meat and תכלת, he now says recognition by sight is stronger. He proves it from a blind man and from husbands at night, who know their wives by voice. רב יצחק בריה דרב משרשיא adds a proof from witnesses in a murder case, and רב אשי adds one from a man sending a messenger. Then a new משנה begins about the גיד הנשה. It discusses how much of the nerve must be removed, and how many lashes a person gets for eating it. The גמרא tells how שמואל rebuked בר פיולי for not cutting deep enough, and רב ששת explains what בר פיולי left behind. Finally, שמואל teaches that the Torah forbids only the part of the nerve on the כף הירך. רב פפא links this to a dispute between תנאים, whose reasoning continues on the next amud.
