How רבנן and רבי יהודה read the פסוק of גיד הנשה, and the משנה about a גיד הנשה cooked or roasted with other food
Overview
The amud first finishes the dispute about eating a small גיד הנשה. רבי יהודה requires a כזית because the פסוק says 'eating', while רבנן use that word to teach that one כזית out of a big nerve is enough. Going back and forth, the גמרא shows how each side uses 'על כף הירך' and 'הירך' differently. It ends that part by answering that the word כף is written twice, so it can both exclude birds and teach שמואל's rule. Then a new משנה teaches that a thigh cooked with its גיד הנשה is forbidden if the nerve gives off taste, measured like meat flavoring a turnip. The same rule applies to a forbidden piece cooked with other pieces: if it is recognized we go by taste, if not all the pieces are forbidden, and the broth always goes by taste. In the גמרא, שמואל limits the משנה to cooking, saying a thigh roasted with the nerve may be peeled and eaten up to the nerve. The גמרא challenges him from רב הונא, who forbids a kid roasted with its חלב even at the tip of its ear, and the answer comes on the next amud.
Opening lines
וְרַבִּי יְהוּדָה – אֲכִילָה כְּתִיבָה בֵּיהּ,
And Rabbi Yehuda? 'Eating' is written regarding it,
וְרַבָּנַן – הַהִיא אֲכִילָה
And the Rabbis? That word 'eating' is needed
דְּכִי אִית בֵּיהּ אַרְבָּעָה וַחֲמִשָּׁה זֵיתִים
to teach that when it contains four or five olive-bulks
וַאֲכַל חַד כְּזַיִת מִיחַיַּיב.
and he ate one olive-bulk, he is liable.
