Opening locks across domains on שבת: רבי מאיר vs. the חכמים, חוקקין להשלים, רב דימי's rule on a מקום פטור, and a new משנה on a knobbed bolt
Overview
This amud finishes a משנה where רבי מאיר says a person may not stand in one domain and open a lock in another domain unless he builds a ten-טפחים מחיצה. The חכמים answer with a story about a market in ירושלים where merchants took the key from a window above the door, and רבי יוסי corrects which market it was. The גמרא then quotes a ברייתא about garden gates and shop locks, where רבי מאיר and the חכמים disagree about where the key may be kept when the lock is high. The גמרא asks how big that lock is. אביי answers that it is under four by four but could be carved out to four, and the two sides argue whether we count that carving room (חוקקין להשלים). רב ביבי בר אביי draws three lessons from this. First, the rule of חוקקין להשלים has a source. Second, רבי מאיר retracted his strict ruling in the משנה. Third, the חכמים support רב דימי's rule that a מקום פטור may not be used to pass objects between two restricted domains. A new משנה follows, in which רבי אליעזר and רבי יוסי argue about locking with a knobbed bolt and each tells the טבריה story in the opposite way. The גמרא begins narrowing their dispute, and it continues on the next amud.
