Water in a קרפף, and how to permit carrying in the yard in פום נהרא using a לחי
Overview
Earlier, the גמרא ruled that water inside a קרפף is treated like planted trees, so it does not ruin the area's status as enclosed for living. אמימר limits this to water that is fit for use. רב אשי adds a limit for deep water covering more than בית סאתים, but the גמרא rejects his limit by comparing the water to a pile of fruit, which never ruins the קרפף however big it is. Then the גמרא tells of a large yard in פום נהרא that opened on one side to the town and on the other to a vineyard path leading to a riverbank. אביי looks for a way to permit carrying there. A wall on the riverbank fails because a מחיצה cannot be built on top of a מחיצה, and a doorframe fails because camels would knock it down. So אביי suggests a לחי at the vineyard path's opening. רבא objects that people would wrongly think a לחי works for any vineyard path, so he places the לחי at the yard's opening to the town instead. Carrying within the town and within the yard is then permitted. Carrying between them is disputed by רב אחא and רבינא.

but if it is not fit for use — no.
