Which foods and amounts are valid for an עירוב: beets, apples, wine, vinegar, and onions.

Overview

The amud opens by finishing the discussion of raw beets. In one version, raw beets are valid for an עירוב and only half-cooked beets are dangerous. In another version, רב המנונא forbids raw beets because רב חסדא said they kill, and the גמרא explains that he too means half-cooked beets. רב חסדא then praises well-cooked beets, and אביי adds that they must be fully boiled. Next, רבא invites questions like בן עזאי, and a scholar asks how many apples an עירוב needs. The גמרא proves from the משנה of כל האוכלין מצטרפין that apples are valid, and רב נחמן rules that a קב is needed. A challenge from a ברייתא that lists five peaches is answered, and רב יוסף shows that רב's 'and the same for עירוב' belongs to the משנה about gifts to the poor. This is confirmed by רב's rule of two רביעיות of wine. The גמרא then discusses combining foods, cooked wine, vinegar, and onions: onion bulbs are valid, but harmful onion leaves are not. The amud ends in the middle of a further limit on the danger of onion leaves, which continues on the next amud.
