Onion dangers, then the minimum amounts of beer, dates, and other foods needed for an עירוב

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a health warning about onion leaves. They are dangerous only before the plant grows a זרת, and רב פפא says drinking beer afterward removes the danger. A ברייתא warns against eating onion because of its poison, and tells how רבי חנינא nearly died from it. The גמרא then brings שמואל's rule that beer may be used for an עירוב and that three לוגין of it invalidate a מקוה. It defends that rule against רב כהנא's objection that it is obvious from dye-water. Next it discusses the minimum amounts of different foods for an עירוב. רב אחא's proposal for beer, built on a ratio of four from the laws of carrying, is rejected. רב יוסף's proof that a קב of dates is enough is pushed back by אביי. Amounts are given for שתיתא and roasted grain, along with two health tips from אביי's foster mother. Finally, שמואל divides foods into relish and main food. רבה and רב יוסף argue about roasted meat, and אביי rejects רב יוסף's proof from the Persians, since הלכה follows the practice of most of the world.

Opening lines

דְּלָא אִבְּצִיל זִירְתָּא,

where it has not grown to a span,

אֲבָל אִבְּצִיל זִירְתָּא —

but if it has grown to a span —

לֵית לַן בַּהּ.

we have no problem with it.
