An עירוב placed in a tree: עולא's rule for the bent tree, and the ברייתא of רבי and חכמים explained by רבינא

Overview

This עמוד first finishes an unusual tree case. The tree bends sideways and then rises upright again, and the person chose his שבת base at the tree's root. The גמרא asks why he cannot simply bring the עירוב over through the high branches. It answers that the public rests loads on the bent section, so following עולא that section counts as רשות הרבים, and the עירוב cannot be carried across it. Next the גמרא asks which source shows the views of רבי and of רבנן. It quotes a ברייתא about an עירוב placed in a tree at different heights or in a basket hung on the tree. The גמרא shows that חכמים are arguing on the case below ten טפחים, not on the basket case. Then it asks how wide the tree in the ברייתא is. רבינא answers that the first clause is a tree four טפחים wide, while in the basket clause the tree is narrower and the basket brings it up to four.
