חמר גמל, stepping outside the תחום, and the end of פרק מי שהוציאוהו

Overview

The amud opens by asking whose view the story of רב נתן בר אושעיא follows, and concludes that it could fit either רב יוסף or רבה. Next, the גמרא asks why our משנה repeats רבי מאיר's ruling of חמר גמל. רב ששת answers that the earlier משנה covered only a doubtful עירוב, while ours teaches that he is a חמר גמל even when he certainly made no עירוב. A new משנה then rules that someone who stepped outside his תחום may not come back in, while רבי אליעזר allows it from two אמות. The גמרא brings two versions of רבי חנינא about a person with one foot in and one foot out, linking the lenient view to אחרים, who go by where most of the body is. It then reconciles conflicting ברייתות about רבי אליעזר's numbers, explaining one as counting differently and the other as speaking of a מודד. Another משנה rules that a traveler caught outside the תחום at nightfall may not enter, but רבי שמעון allows fifteen אמות because surveyors set the marker inside the true limit to guard against measuring errors. The פרק ends, and the next פרק begins explaining how a city's border is drawn, continuing on the next amud.
