Courtyard עירוב problems: a forgetful resident, ביטול רשות on שבת, and when a גוי forbids carrying in a מבוי

Overview

This amud begins at the end of רבא's ruling about an inner חצר and an outer חצר that share one עירוב. If someone from the outer חצר forgot to join, the inner חצר is still permitted, because its residents can shut the door. רב הונא בריה דרב יהושע asks why a forgetful inner resident cannot simply do ביטול רשות. רבא answers that this fix works only for רבי אליעזר. He ruled like the רבנן, who require giving up rights to every single resident. After a short story about how רב חסדא and רב ששת were in awe of each other, רב חסדא asks רב ששת two questions. The first is about two houses that גוים fenced in on שבת, and רב ששת rules אין מבטלין. The second is about a גוי in a shared courtyard who died on שבת. There רב ששת allows ביטול, while רב המנונא forbids it. Then שמואל rules that a גוי whose courtyard has its own opening to a valley does not forbid the מבוי, because he prefers his private entrance. The גמרא asks what happens if that opening leads to a קרפף instead, and רב נחמן בר אמי's answer continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

שָׁכַח אֶחָד מִן הַחִיצוֹנָה וְלֹא עֵירַב —

If one resident of the outer courtyard forgot and did not join the eruv —

וַדַּאי פְּנִימִית מוּתֶּרֶת,

the inner courtyard is certainly permitted,

דְּאָחֲדָא דַּשָּׁא, וּמִשְׁתַּמְּשָׁא,

because it can close the door and use its own courtyard,

וְחִיצוֹנָה אֲסוּרָה.

but the outer courtyard is forbidden.
