A קרפף next to a courtyard and the מבוי, רבי יוחנן's view of a large קרפף's Torah-level status, and רבה's ruling about bringing water for a מילה on שבת

Overview

This amud opens by finishing a rule about a גוי whose courtyard has an opening outside the alley (מבוי). רבה and רב יוסף add a size rule for an opening into a קרפף. A גוי makes the alley אסור if his קרפף is בית סאתים or less, because that is too small for his needs. A ישראל is the reverse: he makes the alley אסור only if his קרפף is larger than בית סאתים, because he may not carry there and will use the alley. Next, רבי יוחנן rules that a large קרפף not fenced for living is still a רשות היחיד by Torah law. רב הונא בר חיננא challenges this from a ברייתא about a rock in the sea, and רבא and רב אשי each defend רבי יוחנן. רב אשי explains that the רבנן balanced two of their own rules and protected the more common case. The amud ends with a story: רבה allows asking a גוי to bring warm water for a baby's מילה. Afterward, אביי begins an objection from a ברייתא that calls both הזאה and אמירה לגוי a שבות, and his objection continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

אֲפִילּוּ פָּתוּחַ לְקַרְפֵּף.

Even if it opens into an enclosure.

רַבָּה וְרַב יוֹסֵף דְּאָמְרִי תַּרְוַיְיהוּ:

It is Rabba and Rav Yosef who both say:

גּוֹי בֵּית סָאתַיִם — אוֹסֵר,

A gentile with an enclosure of two beit se'a renders it prohibited,

יוֹתֵר מִבֵּית סָאתַיִם — אֵינוֹ אוֹסֵר.

More than two beit se'a: he does not render it prohibited.
