Groups sharing a hall, brothers fed by their father, and which buildings in a courtyard count as a residence for עירוב.

Overview

The amud opens with a ברייתא of רבי יהודה הסבר. It says that בית שמאי and בית הלל agree that groups in a hall divided by partitions reaching the ceiling each need their own עירוב, and they argue only about partitions that stop short of the ceiling. The גמרא uses this ברייתא to refute some earlier views and support others, including the two versions of רב נחמן about a מסיפס. רב rules like רבי יהודה הסבר, and רב נחמן בר יצחק shows that the משנה's 'rooms and upper stories' means partitions reaching the ceiling. Two versions of a ברייתא then disagree about whether the dispute depends on the עירוב being placed elsewhere or coming to the groups. A new משנה teaches that brothers fed by their father but living in their own houses each need their own share, unless the עירוב is placed with them. The גמרא suggests that this proves the place where a person sleeps decides where he lives, and רב rejects that proof. Finally, a ברייתא debates whether storage buildings in a friend's courtyard block carrying, and רבי יהודה says only a real place of residence does. The amud ends as רב begins to define a 'מקום דירה', and his answer continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

מֵיתִיבִי, אָמַר רַבִּי יְהוּדָה הַסַּבָּר:

They raised an objection: Rabbi Yehuda the Keen said:

לֹא נֶחְלְקוּ בֵּית שַׁמַּאי וּבֵית הִלֵּל

Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel did not disagree

עַל מְחִיצוֹת הַמַּגִּיעוֹת לַתִּקְרָה

about partitions that reach the ceiling

שֶׁצְּרִיכִין עֵירוּב לְכׇל חֲבוּרָה וַחֲבוּרָה.

that they require an eiruv for each and every group.
