How עירוב חצירות and שיתוף מבואות work together according to רבי מאיר, and why רב left 'opening into one another' out of the משנה.

Overview

This amud finishes the משנה about carrying in courtyards and an alleyway (מבוי). An עירוב חצירות joins the houses of one courtyard, and a שיתוף מבואות joins the courtyards that open into one alleyway. If both are made, carrying is allowed everywhere. If one courtyard resident forgot the עירוב but joined the שיתוף, carrying is still allowed everywhere. If one alleyway resident skipped the שיתוף, only the alleyway is forbidden. The גמרא says the משנה follows רבי מאיר, who requires both an עירוב and a שיתוף. After challenges that the משנה seems to switch to רבנן, it explains that רבי מאיר requires an עירוב only so children do not forget it. When most residents made one, that concern does not apply. The גמרא then reports that רב's version of the משנה left out 'courtyards opening into one another.' רב יוסף explains that a שיתוף's food must pass through the alleyway. That explanation is defended against two משניות but refuted by רבה בר חנן. The גמרא then gives a new reason: an alleyway needs houses and courtyards opening into it. It begins examining that rule of רב, which continues on the next amud.
