The end of the story of איבות בר איהי's לחי (where a person sleeps sets his residence), and רב's ruling about an alley shared by a גוי and a Jew, with אביי and רב יוסף discussing its reason

Overview

This amud finishes the story of איבות בר איהי, who lived in an alley and set up a לחי with שמואל's permission, even though רבי אלעזר had objected that a לחי needs an alley with several residences. After שמואל died, רב ענן knocked the לחי down, and איבות protested. The גמרא first concludes from this that שמואל never accepted רבי אלעזר's objection. It then rejects that proof: a חזן slept in a synagogue on that alley, so it really had more than one residence. איבות misunderstood because he held that where a person eats determines his residence, while שמואל holds that where he sleeps determines it. Next, רב rules that in an alley with a גוי on one side and a Jew on the other, the Jews may not make an עירוב through windows to permit carrying through the doors into the alley. אביי asks רב יוסף whether this applies to a חצר too, and explains that he might have thought רב's reason applies only to a מבוי. רב יוסף challenges this, asking why רב would need two rulings. אביי begins to answer that both are needed, and his answer continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

אֲתָא רַב עָנָן שַׁדְיֵהּ.

Rav Anan came and threw it (the side post) down.

אָמַר: מְבוֹאָה דְּדָיַירְנָא בֵּיהּ

He (Ivut) said: The alley in which I have been living

וְאָתֵינָא מִשְּׁמֵיהּ דְּמָר שְׁמוּאֵל,

and I have been acting on the ruling of Master Shmuel,

נֵיתֵי רַב עָנָן בַּר רַב נִישְׁדְּיֵיהּ מִן?!

shall Rav Anan bar Rav come and throw it away from me?!
