רב's rule about a גוי in a מבוי and a חצר, and the משנה of two courtyards one inside the other, with the three-way dispute over whether a resident's right of passage forbids
Overview
This amud opens by finishing a צריכותא: רב needed two rulings, one teaching that a גוי's home is not a real דירה and one teaching that a מבוי needs two houses. Because רב applied his rule even to a חצר, the גמרא concludes his reason is אסור לעשות יחיד במקום גוי, and רב יוסף says this explains why רבי טבלא said 'גוי, גוי' twice. Then a new משנה describes two courtyards, one inside the other, and rules who forbids whom when one or both made an עירוב, when someone forgot to join, and when they share one עירוב. רבי עקיבא holds that the inner residents' דריסת הרגל forbids the outer courtyard, and the חכמים disagree. In the גמרא, רב דימי reports that רבי ינאי assigned a clause to רבי עקיבא and said the חכמים hold that no 'foot' forbids. The גמרא challenges this again and again from the משנה, which seems to assume a middle view: a permitted foot does not forbid, but a forbidden foot does. Finally רבין gives a corrected version: the תנא קמא holds the middle view, רבי עקיבא is the strictest, and the later רבנן are the most lenient. The amud closes by explaining that 'one place' in the משנה means the outer courtyard, a place designated for both.

הֲוָה אָמֵינָא:
I would have said:
דִּירַת גּוֹי שְׁמָהּ דִּירָה,
a gentile's residence is considered a residence,
קָא מַשְׁמַע לַן
so he teaches us
דְּדִירַת גּוֹי לֹא שְׁמָהּ דִּירָה.
that a gentile's residence is not considered a residence.
