Using the air between domains, and where an עירוב or שיתוף may be placed (gatehouses, sheds, courtyards), with רבי יהודה's rule on the owner's right of usage.

Overview

The amud opens with the end of רב's ruling about two houses with three ruins between them. Each house may use the ruin next to it, but the middle ruin is forbidden to both. רב explains that the ruins stand in a triangle, so each side ruin can be reached by the far house only through the air, and the air does not forbid. The גמרא then defends שמואל, who holds that the air does forbid: that fence applies only to domains that are rabbinic. It also defends רב's ban on throwing between two houses across רשות הרבים: the concern is that the object may fall into the street, not the air. A new משנה teaches that an עירוב placed in a gatehouse, portico or balcony is invalid, and a resident there does not forbid. In storage sheds an עירוב is valid and a resident does forbid, unless, says רבי יהודה, the owner keeps a right of usage there. The גמרא works out where an עירוב and a שיתוף may be kept: an עירוב goes in a house, and a שיתוף goes in a courtyard. It applies this to a group whose meal ran into שבת. Finally, it gives the courtyard of בוניס as an example of a right of usage and begins a story about his son visiting רבי, which continues on the next amud.
