Honoring the wealthy, the landlord's hold through stored items, a resident away for שבת, and the partition in a shared cistern
Overview
This amud opens at the end of a story. רבי gives honor to visitors according to their wealth. רבי ישמעאל ברבי יוסי protests that בן בוניס, whose father owns a thousand ships and a thousand towns, is the richer one. The גמרא explains that רבי and רבי עקיבא honored the wealthy, based on רבא בר מרי's reading of a פסוק in תהלים. Back in הלכה, a landlord who stores a מוקצה item, like a plough pin, in his tenant's space keeps a real hold there, so the tenant does not forbid the courtyard. A new משנה asks whether someone who leaves home for שבת still forbids the courtyard: רבי מאיר, רבי יהודה, רבי יוסי and רבי שמעון give four views. רב rules like רבי שמעון, but only when the man went to his daughter's house, not his son's. A second משנה deals with a cistern shared by two courtyards, which needs a ten-טפחים partition. The גמרא then debates what 'below' and 'above' mean, and a new challenge from a beam in a ruin begins that finishes on the next amud.
