Carrying on roofs on שבת: combining a roof with an אכסדרה or a ruin, and the dispute of רב and שמואל about a single roof and a ship
Overview
This amud begins with the end of an answer from the previous amud: a certain structure was built to guard a garden, not to reach the roofs. רמי בר חמא then asks about carrying two אמות on a roof and two אמות on a pillar. רבה objects that this is obvious, since a roof is a כרמלית and the pillar is a רשות היחיד. So the גמרא explains that the real question was about a roof and an אכסדרה, which is not fit to live in. רב ביבי בר אביי asks a similar question about a roof and a ruin. He explains that a ruin, unlike an אכסדרה, is fit to live in, even though no one lives there now. That question ends with תיקו, unresolved. Next, רב and שמואל disagree about carrying on a single roof: רב allows the whole roof, and שמואל allows only four אמות. The גמרא settles each one's apparent self-contradiction, using noticeable walls for רב and the size of the roof (more than two בית סאה, like a קרפף not enclosed for living) for שמואל. Finally, the same two argue about carrying on a ship, and the explanation of רב's view continues on the next amud.
