חצר קטנה שנפרצה לגדולה — the one-way rule of breached courtyards, and אביי's objection that a מחיצה here causes an איסור

Overview

This amud finishes a ברייתא about a small courtyard whose shared wall with a large courtyard has broken open. The gap counts as a doorway of the large courtyard, so the large courtyard spreads into the small one, but the small one does not spread into the large one. The ברייתא applies this one-way rule to כלאים, a גט, a שליח ציבור, a מנין, and reciting קריאת שמע near צואה. אביי objects that, in the כלאים case, the wall makes things stricter than an open field, where one would only need to keep four אמות from the vines. He calls this a 'מחיצה לאיסור', a partition that forbids. רבי זירא challenges him from a משנה: evening out the edges of a breached large courtyard would make it forbidden. אביי answers that building those walls really counts as removing partitions. רבא then raises a new challenge, and the teaching he quotes comes on the next amud.
