Whose view do the rulings about a four-handbreadth beam follow, and do אביי and רבא in the סוכה case split along the lines of the רב and שמואל dispute over פי תקרה יורד וסותם?
Overview
This amud finishes the chapter כל גגות and begins the chapter המוצא תפילין. First, the גמרא asks whose view two four-handbreadth beam rulings follow. It also checks whether the dispute between אביי and רבא about a סוכה on a portico is the same as the dispute between רב and שמואל. It concludes that the two disputes are not identical. Next, it explains that רבי יוסי meant to forbid carrying even on that same שבת. It then resolves an apparent contradiction in שמואל's rulings: he follows רבי יהודה when a breach opens into a כרמלית, but not when it opens into רשות הרבים. A new משנה follows: רבי יהודה permits carrying under an upper story or bridge, and making an עירוב for an alley open at both ends. רבה explains that the upper-story case rests on פי תקרה יורד וסותם, and רב אשי proves this from the word ועוד. After the הדרן, the new chapter opens with the case of someone who finds תפילין outside on שבת and brings them in by wearing them.
