Why פי תקרה יורד וסותם does not save a house breached on two sides, and the dispute between רב and שמואל about an אכסדרה

Overview

The עמוד opens by finishing an earlier point: a breach at the corner of a חצר cannot count as a doorway, because nobody builds a doorway in a corner. The גמרא then turns to the משנה's case of a house breached on two sides. It asks why the rule of פי תקרה יורד וסותם does not seal the house, since that rule treats the roof's edge as a wall coming down. The school of רב answers that the breach is at a corner under a slanted roof. שמואל answers that the breach is wider than ten אמות. The גמרא presses שמואל with two questions. It also notes that in the case of an אכסדרה in a valley, שמואל seems to reject the roof-edge rule entirely. That contradiction is resolved: שמואל rejects the rule only when all four sides depend on it, and accepts it for three. The original question is then answered with a corner breach where the roof would have to seal four sides. The גמרא explains why each אמורא did not adopt the other's explanation and lays out the reasons behind their אכסדרה dispute. It gives two opposite versions of whether they argue about openings of ten אמות or wider. A statement of רב יהודה is then introduced, and it continues on the next עמוד.
