בְּרֵירָה (deciding later which item was meant all along) in רבי יהודה's view: it does not work when it depends on a person's own decision, but it does work when it depends on something outside his control. רב משרשיא then challenges this.
Overview
This amud finishes a proof that רבי יהודה rejects בְּרֵירָה when a person makes something depend on his own later choice. The proof is the case of wine bought from כותים, where רבי יהודה, רבי יוסי and רבי שמעון forbid drinking right away, while רבי מאיר permits it. The גמרא then quotes a משנה about a sick husband's conditional גט. There רבי יהודה says the גט takes effect when he dies, which shows he accepts בְּרֵירָה when the outcome depends on something outside the person's control. רב משרשיא then points out to רבא that רבי שמעון holds the very same split. The גמרא proves the first half from the wine case. It proves the second half from a ברייתא about betrothal made conditional on the father's wish. That ברייתא, and the point of רב משרשיא's challenge, continue on the next amud.
