Whether a גוי's ownership removes the land's obligations, and whether owning a field's produce counts like owning the field (ביכורים)
Overview
This amud finishes the גמרא's challenges to רבה, who holds that a גוי's purchase cannot free land in ארץ ישראל from מעשר. A ברייתא about a field shared by a Jew and a גוי seems to show that everyone agrees a גוי's share is exempt. The גמרא answers that the case is in סוריא, where כיבוש יחיד makes the land's holiness weaker. רב חייא בר אבין then challenges רבה from our משנה, which says a seller buys back the fruit and brings ביכורים only because of תיקון העולם. רב אשי answers that there were two rabbinic תקנות, first stopping the ביכורים and then putting them back. Next comes a dispute between רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש: does someone who bought only a field's produce recite the ביכורים declaration? That depends on whether קנין פירות is like קנין הגוף. They argue back and forth using a husband who brings his wife's ביכורים. The amud ends as the גמרא begins showing that the two follow the same reasoning in another case, which continues on the next amud.
