Conditional גיטין: a condition to marry a named man, impossible conditions, and forbidden conditions

Overview

The amud opens by finishing an earlier discussion. Once a husband fully frees his wife, even for a short time, the גט works according to both רבי אליעזר and the רבנן. Next comes a ברייתא about a גט given 'on condition that you marry so-and-so.' רב נחמן tries two readings of it, and רבא knocks down the second, including a comparison to a vow about sleeping. רבא then gives his own reading, and a ברייתא backs him up. Before the fact, she may marry neither the named man nor anyone else. After the fact, she stays with the named man but must leave any other man. Then a ברייתא brings conditions no one can fulfill, like going up to the sky. רבי יהודה בן תימא says the husband was only exaggerating, so the גט is valid, and the הלכה follows him. Last, אביי and רבא argue whether a forbidden condition, like eating בשר חזיר, counts as impossible. רבא defends his view against a ברייתא about relations with 'my father or your father.'

Opening lines

מִסְתַּבְּרָא, בֵּין לְרַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר בֵּין לְרַבָּנַן,

It stands to reason, both according to Rabbi Eliezer and according to the Rabbis,

כֵּיוָן דְּפַסְקַהּ – פַּסְקַהּ.

once he has cut her off, he has cut her off.

תָּנוּ רַבָּנַן: ״הֲרֵי זֶה גִּיטִּיךְ

The Sages taught: 'This is your bill of divorce

עַל מְנָת שֶׁתִּנָּשְׂאִי לִפְלוֹנִי״ –

on condition that you marry so-and-so'
