Refused gifts and ריש לקיש's rule, then the laws of an אשם תלוי or אשם ודאי that turns out to be unneeded, and when an עגלה ערופה becomes forbidden.

Overview

The גמרא finishes testing ריש לקיש, who holds that a refused gift belongs to no one, so whoever grabs it first acquires it. It defends him against three sources: "his words stand," "my hand is removed from this field," and a ברייתא about refused slaves eating תרומה. The last one is answered with the rule that a slave made ownerless still needs a גט שחרור, and until he gets it he eats תרומה. The גמרא then returns to the משנה about an אשם תלוי that turns out to be unneeded. It explains רבי אליעזר's view by linking it to the Sages who told בבא בן בוטא to wait for a real doubt. Next it deals with the burning versus burying of unneeded offerings. רבה calls the משנה a תברא, and רב אשי explains the burning as being only because the meat looks like a disqualified offering. It then explains why the meat may be eaten if the truth comes out after the blood is sprinkled, and gives two explanations of רבי יוסי's view. Finally, it brings a dispute between רב המנונא and רבא about when an עגלה ערופה becomes forbidden, and asks רב המנונא from what moment the איסור starts.

Opening lines

מַאי לָאו ״דְּבָרָיו קַיָּימִין״

What, is it not that "his words stand"

means that it returns to its owner?

לָא, דְּבָרָיו קַיָּימִין

No, "his words stand"

– וְהוּא נָמֵי לָא קָנֵי לַהּ,

means that he too does not acquire it,
