Status of a בת כהן, the laws of applying שמן המשחה, whether יום הכיפורים and a חטאת atone for someone who refuses atonement, and whether a מגדף brings a קרבן.
Overview
The amud opens with a ברייתא about a בת כהן who married out of כהונה and ate תרומה. רבי מאיר judges her by her status now, while the חכמים say her original status stays with her. רב יוסף then limits the earlier מחלוקת about placing שמן המשחה to that oil alone. The גמרא learns that whoever may not apply שמן המשחה may not have it applied to him. It also teaches that even oil already on the כהן גדול's head stays holy, unlike used תרומה oil. Back on the משנה, ריש לקיש and רבי יוחנן explain why someone whose sin was covered by יום הכיפורים is not listed with those who bring no אשם תלוי. This leads to whether a חטאת or יום הכיפורים atones for someone who refuses the atonement, and why רבא changed his mind. Two ספרא sources about יום הכפורים seem to clash; אביי and רבא each resolve this, and רבא's proof from the כרת of יום הכפורים is pushed back. The amud ends with the מגדף: the חכמים answer רבי עקיבא, and the גמרא begins challenging רבי עקיבא's reason that כרת brings a קרבן, which continues on the next amud.

The steps (38)
- StatementA בת כהן married to a ישראל eats תרומה
- Statementרבי מאיר: married to a disqualified man, she is treated like a full outsider
- StatementThe חכמים: both cases are judged as a בת כהן
- Statementרב יוסף limits the dispute to placing the anointing oil
- StatementWhoever may not apply the oil may not have it applied to him
- Proofרבי אלעזר supports the teaching from the way the פסוק is read
- StatementA כהן גדול who moves the oil from his head to his stomach is liable
- ChallengeWhy is this different from a כהן's תרומה oil?
- Resolutionתרומה becomes profaned once used, but anointing oil stays holy
- QuestionWhat does the משנה's exception for one who makes the מקדש impure leave out?
- ResponseThe exception is only about the אשם תלוי
- ChallengeWhy not also list someone who had יום הכיפורים pass?
- Resolutionריש לקיש: the משנה lists only cases where the sin is still there
- Resolutionרבי יוחנן: the case of someone who rejects יום הכיפורים
- StatementWhy ריש לקיש did not give רבי יוחנן's answer
- StatementThe same argument: a חטאת its owner does not want to atone
- ResponseExactly where אביי and רבא disagree
- Conclusionרבא takes back his view because of a ברייתא
- RejectionThe ברייתא Pushes Back: יום הכיפורים Is Stronger Than קרבנות
- ProofThe Word 'אך' Limits יום הכיפורים
- QuestionWhat Do 'Returners' and 'Non-Returners' Mean?
- RejectionIt Can't Mean Accidental Versus Deliberate
- ResponseMaybe It Means עולא's Case of an Apostate
- RejectionThe קרבן Is Rejected, but the Person Isn't
- ResponseReturners Want Atonement, Non-Returners Refuse It
- ConclusionProof That Refusing Atonement Blocks It
- ChallengeA second ספרא source seems to contradict the first
- Resolutionאביי: each source follows a different view
- ProofProof that רבי holds יום הכפורים atones without תשובה
- Resolutionרבא: both sources are רבי's own view
- ProofProof: otherwise the כרת of יום הכפורים could never happen
- RejectionRejecting רבא's proof: a man who sins all night and dies at dawn
- ChallengeBut how can there be כרת for sinning during the day?
- ResolutionDaytime cases: choking, sinning near sunset, or a deadly accident
- QuestionWhy do the חכמים say 'even the blasphemer'?
- ResponseThe חכמים answer רבי עקיבא's logic about the ידעוני
- Statementרבי עקיבא: the blasphemer brings an offering
- ChallengeDoes every sin with כרת bring an offering? Not פסח and מילה
