Does writing "I owe you" in a document, without a formal act of acquisition (קנין), create a real obligation? The גמרא keeps testing the view of ריש לקיש (no obligation) against the view of רבי יוחנן (yes, obligated).
Overview
The גמרא continues the argument between רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש about whether writing "I owe you" in a document creates a real debt without a קנין. First it pushes away a proof for רבי יוחנן. That case was about engagement agreements, which are binding by words alone, as רב גידל taught in the name of רב. Next it challenges ריש לקיש from a father who writes to a כהן, "I owe you five סלעים," for פדיון הבן. The answer is that the Torah already obligates the father, and the note only picks which כהן gets the money. The גמרא then asks why the son is not redeemed, and answers with עולא: by Torah law he is redeemed once the money is paid, but the חכמים decreed otherwise so people won't think one can redeem with documents. Finally רבא links the argument to one between רבי ישמעאל and בן ננס about a ערב who signs after the document was already signed. The גמרא begins to question that link, noting that according to בן ננס everyone agrees. That discussion continues on the next amud.
