רב ענן and אליהו, רב יוסף's refusal to pray, the shrinking yeshivos, and Temple workers paid from תרומת הלשכה
Overview
The amud finishes the story of רב ענן. רב נחמן thought a man was רב ענן's relative and decided that כבוד תורה comes first. So he judged that man's case before a case about orphans. The other side was too intimidated to argue, and justice was bent. Because of this, אליהו stopped visiting רב ענן. רב ענן fasted and prayed until אליהו came back, but now אליהו frightened him, so רב ענן sat in a box until the teaching was finished. This is why there is a סדר אליהו רבה and a סדר אליהו זוטא. Next, רב יוסף refuses to pray during a time of divine anger. He reasons with a קל וחומר from אלישע, and the גמרא proves from a פסוק that 2,200 students stayed with אלישע. It then lists how many students stayed behind at later yeshivos, a number that kept getting smaller. The גמרא then returns to the list of people paid from תרומת הלשכה, including the inspectors of blemishes, teachers of the כהנים, proofreaders of scrolls and curtain weavers. רב נחמן says the curtain weavers were paid from בדק הבית, and the גמרא defends him from a ברייתא by explaining that it refers to the curtains of the gates. A ברייתא and אבא שאול disagree about who paid the women who raised children for the פרה אדומה. The amud ends as רב הונא begins a question to רב, which continues on the next amud.
