Which Temple fund pays for the כלי שרת, and whether הקדש money may be used to make a profit
Overview
רב הונא asks רב whether the Temple's כלי שרת may be paid for with בדק הבית money, or only from תרומת הלשכה. רב rules: only from תרומת הלשכה. A פסוק in דברי הימים seems to show repair money used for vessels, but רב answers with a פסוק in מלכים that says the repair money went to the workers. The גמרא settles the clash between the two פסוקים: only money left over after the repairs went to vessels, because בית דין silently made that condition from the start. A ברייתא from the school of רבי ישמעאל supports רב, reading 'הכסף' as the first money, the main תרומת הלשכה. Another ברייתא says כלי שרת come from מותר נסכים. The גמרא answers that this is a dispute between תנאים, and quotes a משנה with the views of רבי ישמעאל, רבי עקיבא and רבי חנינא. It then explains רבי ישמעאל's 'leftover produce' as profit from trading with leftover money. רבי עקיבא rejects this, because he forbids making profits with הקדש money or with charity money. Finally the גמרא returns to our משנה about a husband who went overseas, and begins רב's opinion, which continues on the next amud.
