Whether the court gives food support from an absent husband's property to his wife, the reasons for שמואל's refusal, and how he answers the sources that seem to go against him.

Overview

רב rules that the court gives food support (מזונות) from a husband's property to his wife when he has gone overseas. שמואל rules that it does not, though he says רב agrees for the first three months. Everyone agrees she gets support once the husband is known to be dead. The argument is only when there is no word of his death. רב זביד explains that שמואל worries the husband left her money, and רב פפא explains that he worries the husband told her to live on her earnings. The two reasons give different results for a grown woman whose earnings are not enough, and for a young wife whose earnings are enough. The גמרא then challenges שמואל from a משנה and from several ברייתות where the court gives support. Each time it answers that the husband had been reported dead. For the last ברייתא, רב ששת's answer about a third party is rejected. רב פפא instead explains it as a case of one witness, which is enough for the wife but not for the children's inheritance. Finally, רב חסדא and רב יוסף argue whether the 'something else' in that ברייתא means jewelry or charity, and the comparison of their views continues on the next amud.
