Forcing a spouse to move (town and city, nicer homes, ארץ ישראל and ירושלים), which currency pays a כתובה, and the value of living in ארץ ישראל.
Overview
This amud finishes the משנה about when a husband may make his wife move. He may not force a move between a small town (עיר) and a big city (כרך) in either direction. רבן שמעון בן גמליאל adds that she may refuse even a move to a nicer home, because any change of routine is hard on the body, as שמואל taught. A new משנה then rules that either spouse may force the family to move up to ארץ ישראל or to ירושלים, but no one may force them to leave. A ברייתא spells out the price of refusing: a wife loses her כתובה, and a husband must divorce her and pay it. Next the גמרא explains which country's money pays a כתובה. רבה says the first תנא holds a כתובה is דרבנן and so always allows the cheaper money, while רבן שמעון בן גמליאל holds it is דאורייתא. A ברייתא about loan documents is clarified along the way. The amud ends with strong praise for living in ארץ ישראל, and then begins the story of רבי זירא hiding from רב יהודה, who held that leaving בבל breaks a מצות עשה. That story continues on the next amud.
