When a second document cancels the first; when the כתובה's lien begins; and the punishment of a betrothed נערה from a convert family

Overview

The amud opens by finishing an explanation from the discussion just before it: the wife cannot collect the extra amount of a second כתובה from the earlier date, because he never wrote 'I added to your first כתובה,' so she gave up her first lien. The גמרא then asks whether רב הונא's ruling, that she may collect with either כתובה, argues with רב נחמן's rule that a second document cancels the first. It answers with רב פפא: רב נחמן agrees that if the second document adds anything, even a palm tree, it is an addition. Next the גמרא studies רב נחמן's rule directly. A sale followed by a gift, or a gift followed by a sale, does not cancel the first document, because the second was written for protection. The rule applies only when both documents are the same type. רפרם and רב אחא give two different reasons for the rule, and the גמרא lists the practical differences: the witnesses' trust, paying for produce, and the land tax. The גמרא then rules that the lien for the whole כתובה, both the basic sum and the תוספת, starts only from נישואין. Finally a new משנה teaches how a betrothed נערה who sinned is punished when she or her mother converted, and that the father's doorway is only the preferred place for the סקילה.

״אוֹסֵיפִית לִךְ מֵאָה אַמָּאתַיִם״,

"I added for you one hundred on top of the two hundred"
