A lost כתובה, waiving a כתובה by words alone, and a new משנה on wedding preparation time and eating תרומה
Overview
A woman lost her כתובה, and the couple asked רב יוסף what to do. At first he followed חכמים, who let a couple live together for a while without a written כתובה. אביי reminded him that the הלכה follows רבי מאיר in his גזירות, so רב יוסף told the husband to write a new כתובה. Next, the גמרא asks when a wife can give up part of her כתובה just by saying so. רב דימי and רבין bring opposite reports of what רבי יהושע בן לוי said about this. In both reports רבי יוחנן seems to disagree with him. Each time, רבי אבהו says that רבי יוחנן told him personally that they agree, and the words 'beginning' and 'end' are defined so the two fit. רב פפא says he would otherwise have made the two reports agree and let the two rabbis argue. The גמרא learns from this a rule: we prefer to explain a dispute as two rabbis using their own reasoning, not as a mix-up in reporting one teacher. Finally, a new משנה gives the bride and groom time to prepare for the wedding. It says when a betrothed woman may eat her husband's food and תרומה, and that a יבם does not let her eat תרומה. It then says these rules were the 'first משנה' and begins a later court's ruling, which continues on the next amud.
