The husband's duty to give his wife shoes and clothing (כתובות סה:): why three pairs of shoes but only one set of clothes, the value of 'fifty זוז', and who keeps worn-out clothes
Overview
This amud finishes the chapter אף על פי and begins the chapter מציאת האשה. First the גמרא explains the משנה's rules about the wife's support. She gets three pairs of shoes a year because the משנה is talking about mountain country, and they are given on יום טוב. 'Fifty זוז' for clothing means cheap local coins. Her worn-out clothes are hers to wear during נדה, but a widow's worn clothes go to the heirs. רב נחמן and רב אשי argue whether 'she eats with him' on Friday night means real eating or תשמיש, and both challenges to רב אשי are answered. רבי עולא רבה teaches that a father must feed his very young children until age six. The attempted proof from a nursing wife's extra food is pushed off, and רבי יהושע בן לוי adds that she gets wine. The new chapter's משנה sorts a wife's finds, earnings, inheritance and injury payments between her and her husband. The גמרא explains that the new point is the dispute over בושת and פגם. Then a ברייתא about a wife's finds is recited before רבא, who begins a challenge that continues on the next amud.
