A wife's finds and surplus work, the husband's share in her בושת payment, and how a dowry is recorded in the כתובה

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a challenge. If רבי עקיבא gives a wife the surplus of her handiwork, he should surely give her the things she finds. The גמרא answers by reversing the opinions, so רבי עקיבא gives her the find. רב פפא then explains that a find is like surplus produced through strain, which is exactly where רבי עקיבא and the רבנן disagree. Questions about a wife doing several tasks at once end with תיקו. Next, the גמרא asks why רבי יהודה בן בתירא lets a husband share in his wife's בושת payment. Through the examples of a horse, a garment and a noble family, it concludes that a wife counts as her husband's own self. A new משנה follows. A father-in-law need not give a pledged dowry to his dead son-in-law's brother. The same משנה then explains how a wife's dowry is recorded in the כתובה: cash is written higher, and appraised goods are written one-fifth lower.
