Two deeds for the same property: same-day deeds (רב vs. שמואל, רבי מאיר vs. רבי אלעזר, שודא דדייני) and deeds with exact vs. vague dates

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a suggestion: רב, who says two same-day deeds are split, follows רבי מאיר, for whom the signing witnesses make a deed take effect. שמואל, who leaves it to the judges (שודא דדייני), follows רבי אלעזר, for whom the delivery witnesses make it take effect. The גמרא tries saying that both follow רבי אלעזר and argue only about how to settle doubt. It rejects that, because רב is known to apply רבי אלעזר only to גיטין. A ברייתא that says 'they divide' is used to challenge שמואל. The first answer, that it follows רבי מאיר, fails because of the ברייתא's last clause. So the גמרא says splitting versus discretion is its own argument among the תנאים. Next comes the story of רמי בר חמא's mother, who wrote her property to two sons on one day. רב נחמן defends ruling by שודא דדייני against רב ששת's 'the earlier deed wins.' Finally, רב יוסף rules that a deed dated the fifth of ניסן beats one dated only 'ניסן.' The losing party then starts a request that continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

וּשְׁמוּאֵל דְּאָמַר כְּרַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר,

And Shmuel, who ruled as he did, holds like Rabbi Elazar,

דְּאָמַר: עֵדֵי מְסִירָה כָּרְתִי.

who said: the witnesses of the handing-over make it take effect.

לָא, דְּכוּלֵּי עָלְמָא כְּרַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר,

No, everyone holds like Rabbi Elazar,

וְהָכָא בְּהָא קָמִיפַּלְגִי,

and here they disagree about this:
