Giving up honor (רב, נשיא, מלך) and the מצוה of standing for a זקן
Overview
This amud asks whether a person who is owed honor can give it up. רבא decides that a רב can, because Torah that a person learns becomes 'his Torah'. Two stories show that even so, people must still show the רב some respect (הידור). רב אשי first says a נשיא cannot give up his honor. The story of רבן גמליאל serving drinks at his son's wedding, defended by רבי יהושע and רבי צדוק, disproves that. So the גמרא restates רב אשי's teaching: a מלך can never give up his honor. Next, a ברייתא explains the מצוה of standing for a זקן: who counts as a זקן, when and where one stands, and that the זקן himself should not trouble people. The גמרא then shows that the תנא קמא and רבי יוסי הגלילי argue about a young חכם. It begins to explain each side's reading of the פסוק, and the argument continues on the next amud.
