קידושין with property that is not truly the man's own: stolen items and a כהן's share of קרבנות
Overview
The גמרא first settles a contradiction about a man who betroths a woman with something he took from her. It works only if they had already arranged the match. Next come three stories brought before רבא: coins grabbed from a stranger, a sharecropper's handful of onions, and a brewer's beer sediment. In each case the betrothal fails, because the owner never truly gave up or allowed use of the item. A ברייתא about separating תרומה without permission shows that the 'go to the better ones' test applies only to תרומה, while the brewer's owner spoke out of embarrassment. A new משנה then rules that a כהן cannot betroth with his share of קרבנות, and records disputes about מעשר שני and הקדש. The גמרא explains that after שחיטה the כהנים eat 'from the table of the Most High' and do not own the meat. A story shows רבי יהודה, סומכוס and רבי יוסי arguing whether the case is even realistic. רבי יוחנן then traces their מחלוקת to one פסוק. The amud ends just as רבי יוחנן begins a new statement.
