Overview

The גמרא finishes רב הונא's argument that חופה alone can create קידושין. It first builds a קל וחומר from כסף. When that is challenged, it builds a צד השוה from כסף, ביאה and שטר. Each difference raised is knocked down by another method, and רב הונא answers the last challenge, about working against her will. רבא then brings two objections: the משנה counts only three ways, and חופה only ever completes a marriage after קידושין. אביי answers both. Next, a ברייתא teaches that קידושין with כסף works when the man gives the money and says the words. רב פפא finds a contradiction about the case where he gives and she speaks, and the גמרא gives two answers. Finally, שמואל lists which words work for קידושין and גירושין. רב פפא asks whether this means שמואל accepts unclear phrases (ידים שאין מוכיחות), and the answer continues on the next עמוד.
