תנאי כפול in the פסוקים of סוטה and sprinkling; the משנה on mistaken or future קידושין; and רבי יוחנן's rule that what is in a person's power counts as done.
Overview
The גמרא first explains the strange phrase 'you shall eat the sword' (ישעיהו 1:20). רבא says it means harsh, unhealthy food. Next it tests the סוטה פסוק against the two opinions about תנאי כפול. רבי תנחום shows that the short spelling of הנקי also hints at חנקי, which gives רבי מאיר his second side. It also teaches רבי חנינא בן גמליאל that the punishment is severe. The גמרא then looks at the פסוקים about sprinkling for purity from a dead body and shows that each repeated phrase teaches its own law. A new משנה follows. A man's wrong assumption about a woman's family or wealth does not cancel קידושין. קידושין set to begin 'after' a change he cannot make happen now do not work, and an unborn girl can be betrothed only once the pregnancy is noticeable. In the גמרא, רבי יוחנן rules that anything in a person's power counts as already done. רב אסי challenges this from the convert case, and the גמרא answers that converting is not fully in the man's power. The reason, a teaching of רבי יוחנן, comes on the next amud.
