Acts that take effect later: רבי יוחנן's 'in his hands' rule, תרומה on growing produce, and transferring what does not exist yet

Overview

רבי יוחנן holds that if the thing a later קידושין depends on is fully in a person's own hands (בידו), the קידושין can work. The גמרא explains why this does not help a man who says 'after I convert': a גר needs three judges, and he cannot make them come. It then defends the rule against two challenges. A freed שפחה becomes a completely new person, and after a divorce, remarrying needs the woman's consent. An attempt to use this to settle רב אושעיא's question about two פרוטות is pushed back. A ברייתא about separating תרומה from produce still attached 'when it is detached' supports רבי יוחנן. רבי אליעזר בן יעקב goes further and allows produce that has not yet reached a third of its growth. רבה and רב יוסף argue how far his rule reaches, in two versions, and the גמרא applies each version to betrothing an unborn daughter. Finally אביי says that רבי אליעזר בן יעקב, רבי, and רבי מאיר all hold that a person can transfer something not yet in the world, and the proof for רבי begins on the next amud.

Opening lines

גֵּר צָרִיךְ שְׁלֹשָׁה.

מַאי טַעְמָא:

What is the reason?

״מִשְׁפָּט״ כְּתִיב בֵּיהּ כַּדִּין,

'Law' is written about him, so it is like a court case.

מִי יֵימַר דְּמִזְדַּקְּקוּ לֵיהּ הָנֵי תְּלָתָא.

Who says these three will agree to deal with him?
