צדיקים replacing each other, אגדה about פלטיהו, the lineage of lands, the future purification of ממזרים, and whether a גר may marry a ממזרת
Overview
The amud opens with the last words of רבי on the day he died: a baby has just entered אברהם's covenant, and רב יהודה has just been born. From a chain of sages, each born as the previous one died, the גמרא learns that a צדיק never leaves the world before an equal צדיק is created. It gives a second example from עלי and שמואל. Next it explains a פסוק in איכה with the town הומניא, and brings a disagreement between רב and שמואל on whether יחזקאל's cry over פלטיהו בן בניה was 'for good' or 'for bad.' The גמרא tries to prove which view is שמואל's from his statement about the lineage of מישן, but that proof is pushed back using שמואל's rule that an ownerless slave goes free. The גמרא then returns to lineage: שמואל says the משנה follows רבי מאיר, while the חכמים presume all lands are fine, and אמימר relies on this in a real marriage case despite רב אשי's challenge. A ברייתא follows on whether ממזרים will be purified in the future, and the הלכה follows רבי יוסי that they will. Finally, a new ברייתא asks whether a גר may marry a ממזרת, and the explanation of רבי יוסי's reason continues on the next amud.
