דיחוי in קדשים, unresolved questions about betrothing in halves or with one פרוטה for several things, and the dispute over appraising silk used for קידושין

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a discussion about קדשים. From an animal that was made holy one half at a time, the גמרא learns three rules of דיחוי: it applies to live animals, to something unfit from the very start, and to holiness of monetary value. Then רבא asks a chain of questions about betrothing a woman "half by half." Does a man who betroths each half separately split the קידושין into pieces that cannot work, or is he just counting toward one whole betrothal? רבא, רב פפא and רב אשי then ask how a single פרוטה works when it is meant for more than one thing: two daughters for two sons, a daughter and a cow, or a daughter and land. Every one of these questions ends in תיקו. Next comes a real case of a man who made קידושין with silk garments, and רבה and רב יוסף argue whether the silk must be appraised first. The גמרא narrows the argument to the case where he said "fifty" and it really is worth fifty. A second version says they argue even when he said "any amount," and רב יוסף's reason, that שוה כסף must be like כסף, continues on the next amud.
