Topic
Choosing a trade, where פרנסה comes from, and why תורה lasts a lifetime
Overview
This amud finishes explaining the משנה's advice about teaching a son a trade, and it brings מסכת קידושין to a close. First, the גמרא gives fine embroidery needlework as an example of a clean, easy trade. Then רבי teaches in a ברייתא that the world needs every trade, but it is better to have a pleasant one. רבי מאיר adds that a person should teach his son a clean trade and pray, because wealth comes from ה׳, not from the job. רבי שמעון בן אלעזר uses a קל וחומר: animals get their food without struggle, so people should too. People struggle only because of their sins. Last, רבי נהוראי says he teaches his son only תורה, because a trade helps only in youth, while תורה helps in youth and gives hope in old age. He proves this with two פסוקים. The amud ends with the הדרן for פרק עשרה יוחסין and the end of מסכת קידושין.
