Overview

This amud opens מסכת בבא קמא with a משנה listing the four אבות נזיקין: שור, בור, מבעה, and הבער. The משנה shows that each has a feature the others lack, so no one category could be learned from another. It then names what all four share: damage is normal for them, and you must guard them. When they cause damage, the one responsible pays with מיטב הארץ. The גמרא notes that the word אבות implies there are תולדות. It asks whether those תולדות follow the same law as their אבות. To explore this, it looks at שבת. There a תולדה brings the same חטאת and סקילה as its אב, and the labels matter only for counting how many חטאות are owed. For רבי אליעזר, the names only reflect whether a labor was important in the משכן. The גמרא then begins quoting the משנה that lists the אבות of טומאה, and that discussion continues on the next amud.
