End of the פרק on exile (rent in the ערי מקלט and returning to one's former standing) and the start of the משנה listing sins that bring מלקות
Overview
This עמוד finishes the פרק about people exiled for killing by accident, then starts the פרק about מלקות. First, the משנה records two disputes between רבי יהודה and רבי מאיר. The first is whether the רוצח pays rent to the לויים in the ערי מקלט. The second is whether he gets back his old public office when he goes home. רב כהנא says the rent dispute is about the six main cities. רבא says it is about the forty-two other לויים cities. A ברייתא then shows the same two תנאים arguing about a freed עבד עברי and about the רוצח: does a returning person regain his ancestors' honored standing? After the הדרן, a new משנה lists sins that bring מלקות, including forbidden relationships and marriages, Temple and food sins, and eating טבל. רבי שמעון and the חכמים then argue over how much טבל one must eat to be liable. The גמרא notes that the list includes כרת cases but not court death-penalty cases, and it begins a ברייתא to show the משנה follows רבי עקיבא. That ברייתא continues on the next עמוד.
