Does זריקת דמים take effect on the meat of קדשי קדשים that left the עזרה before the blood was sprinkled? The מחלוקת between רבי אליעזר and רבי עקיבא about מעילה, פיגול, נותר and טמא.

Overview

The משנה discusses meat of קדשי קדשים that left the עזרה before its blood was sprinkled. רבי אליעזר holds the sprinkling does not work on it, so מעילה remains and there is no liability for פיגול, נותר or eating while טמא. רבי עקיבא holds the sprinkling does work, so מעילה ends and those prohibitions apply. He proves this with a קל וחומר from a lost חטאת that was replaced and then found: if one animal's blood exempts the other animal's meat, surely it exempts its own meat. The משנה then brings the same argument about אימורין of קדשים קלים, where sprinkling creates מעילה instead of ending it. The גמרא asks why both disputes are needed, and answers that each one blocks a different wrong guess about רבי אליעזר or רבי עקיבא. רבי יוחנן then limits רבי עקיבא's rule to meat that only partly left the עזרה. רב אסי begins to answer him with a tradition from the sages of בבל, which continues on the next amud.
