Combining intentions for פיגול, and רבי יוסי's view on the לבונה of a מנחה
Overview
The amud opens by asking why our משנה is needed at all, according to אביי. The גמרא first shows that the rule that two half-olive eating intentions combine into פיגול is already implied by the previous משנה. It then argues that the rule that eating and burning intentions do not combine seems obvious by a קל וחומר from the first clause. It answers that this rule was still needed. The earlier case might fail only because one intention was unusual, but eating and burning are each normal, so we might have thought they combine. Then the chapter כל המנחות closes with הדרן, and a new chapter begins with a משנה. רבי יוסי agrees that a next-day plan for the שיריים or the קומץ makes the מנחה פיגול, but he holds that a plan about the לבונה makes it only פסול. When חכמים compare this to an animal offering, he answers that an animal is one unit, but the לבונה is not part of the מנחה. The גמרא then asks why the משנה says 'רבי יוסי agrees,' and starts explaining that this wording rules out a mistaken reason for his view. That explanation continues on the next amud.
